A Stop-Over on the Way to Virtual Reality

http://www.technologyreview.com/computing/24639/?a=f provides a glimpse into the development of a new step in the digital age. In books like Vernor Vinge’s Rainbow’s End and my novel Schism, people are constantly being fed information that is overlayed onto their vision of the real world. This fusion of the real and the virtual is known as augmented reality. It’s been in development for quite some time now but the devices that could make it possible have been too bulky for any kind of practical, real-world application. But now, with camera phones and devices like the iPhone serving as mini-computers, it is finally becoming possible to blend the real world with the digital. Once again, science fiction is turning into something like a preview of coming attractions.
